Geriatric Care
In order to contribute to reducing the physical, mental, and social deficiencies that arise with aging, there has been a need for intermediate personnel who can provide medical and social care services for the elderly. Therefore, the main objective of the program is to ensure that students, by integrating and assimilating the necessary knowledge, skills, and values related to elderly care services, become competent elderly care technicians capable of implementing and improving elderly care services in the public, private, and non-governmental sectors. Graduates of health vocational high schools are eligible to choose this program. The Elderly Care Program consists of a two-year associate degree education. The educational foundations of the elderly care program are based on understanding the basic characteristics and needs of elderly individuals and gaining the skills to meet these needs, as well as developing the ability to approach the elderly holistically. Students provide care services to meet the basic needs of elderly individuals, such as nutrition, general body hygiene, movement, and appropriate bed positioning. They perform medical interventions such as injections, dressing wounds, wound care, and catheter care to ensure the treatment planned by the physician is carried out. They assist in administering medication treatments, monitor daily health indicators such as blood pressure, temperature, pulse, and respiration, and apply first aid principles in emergencies. Additionally, they plan, implement, and facilitate participation in occupational therapy programs to socially support elderly individuals and help them regain self-confidence. They assist in the implementation of programs designed for elderly individuals who require social and physical rehabilitation, help enhance communication between the elderly and society, guide elderly individuals who are socially and economically deprived, and train themselves in adult psychology.
